Pico House Hotel, 424 N Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Join EPPA and staff from El Pueblo Historic Monument for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the Pico House Hotel as part of the 2023 Doors Open California event.
The California Preservation Foundation is proud to present Doors Open California, a unique opportunity to visit remarkable architecture and hidden histories across our state. The event provides special access to distinct, endangered, or preserved buildings, landscapes, and features in various communities. When you register, you'll receive specially curated itineraries that are enjoyable and family-friendly, along with access to the Doors Open app for planning your journey through our state's cultural heritage. These are rare chances to experience history up close, including walking tours, behind-the-scenes visits to local museums, glimpses of inaccessible areas in historic buildings, and engaging stories from our state’s storytellers. Your $20 registration fee also directly supports the leading organization dedicated to safeguarding California’s diverse cultural heritage.
The Pico House Hotel is one of the weekend's featured sites. Built around 1869 and designed by architect Ezra F. Kysor, the building was the creation of Pío Pico, California's last governor during Mexican rule. Adjacent to the Plaza ("La Placita"), this landmark is rarely opened for events or gatherings. The 2023 Open Doors opportunity provides a chance for the public to explore the interior ground floor. Inside, guests will also discover previously unseen maps, plans, and renderings from the Burnett Turner collection. Turner, the principal architect for El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument from the 1950s to the early 1980s, significantly contributed to the transformation of the historic buildings into the monument we see today.
We extend a warm invitation for you to join us in this enriching experience at the Pico House and beyond. Secure your registration today and step into a meaningful connection with history.
